Country Roads: Is It Country?

Mer and Emma answer the ever burning question, "Is it Country?"
How has country music evolved and who decides what is considered 'Country?' The genre has traditionally lacked diversity and been dominated by white men but it is impossible to deny that whether due to tiktok or streaming, the reach of country music is expanding exponentially.
While the style of 'Texas Country' is rather different from 'Nashville Country,' and while they can be divisive, both have relatable lyrics and equally tackle universal topics from cheating to love to heartbreak.
Emma and Meredith discuss the tunes that they adore and have to agree to disagree on a few in particulars. They choose some of their favourites and demonstrate how music made in the rural south can meet fresh contemporary sounds and sometimes even coexist. Whether it's 'bro country' or 'old country', in the end, when it comes down to it, it's really all about the music.
Everyone can play a game of "Is It Country?" They play songs from across genres and decide whether or not they think the song could be classified as country or not.
