'Ask for Angela'
Terri Allington stopped by to chat about the 'Ask for Angela' campaign, a safety initiative that will soon kick off in Luxembourg. Not a secret code, simply a way to get help without an explanation. Created by Hayley Crawford, this initiative has been running for ten years in the UK and Ireland for women and other vulnerable people who feel unsafe. 'Ask for Angela' is a campaign helping people who find themselves in uncomfortable or threatening situations—often on dates—to discreetly ask venue staff for help by using the code phrase "Is Angela here?"
Customers can approach a staff member at the bar, in the restroom, or a security person and ask for "Angela," which alerts them to a need for assistance. Trained staff then assist by calling a taxi, reuniting them with friends, or contacting security. It's a simple scheme and is an intermediary step that Terry is bringing it to Luxembourg. There will be free training for any bar or restaurant and at some point the hope is to roll it out to shops and other businesses and will be made known by displaying a prominent window sticker. By getting involved, the businesses will also be listed in a directory.
