40 years - 40 natural reserves – Däiwelskop
Terraces, dry stone walls and piles of stones bear witness to the former agricultural exploitation of the Däiwelskop above Moersdorf.
The 61 ha Däiwelskopp nature reserve is located on the slope to the Sauer River, above Moersdorf in the municipality of Mompach.
Terraces, dry stone walls and heaps of read stones bear witness to the former agricultural use of the area. However, most of the nutrient-rich but dry shell limestone soils were abandoned long ago and have become overgrown with bushes or even reforested.
The nature reserve is characterized by the high species richness that is characteristic of limestone soils. The early abandonment of use, the sunny exposure, and the existence of special sites such as log debris heaps also contribute to the biodiversity.
The Fondation Hëllef fir d'Natur owns a total of 4 hectares here, of which almost 1.5 hectares are semi-arid grasslands rich in orchids, where rarities such as pasque flower and bergaster thrive alongside 12 different orchid species. An orchid nature trail, established by the Fondation Hëllef fir d'Natur with the support of Sources Rosport, makes the floristic peculiarities accessible to a broad public.
The semi-arid grasslands are endangered due to overgrowth and scrub encroachment. For this reason, the priority habitats are to be subjected to extensive sheep grazing in accordance with the maintenance plan drawn up in 2007 by the Fondation Hëllef fir d'Natur on behalf of the nature conservation administration.
