40 years - 40 natural reserves – Wéngertsbierg

The Wéngertsbierg is located 15 km northeast of the capital. There is a mosaic of different plant groups with all transitional stages.

The Canecher Wéngertsbierg nature reserve consists mainly of a south-facing hill with numerous terraces and small plots. The "Canecher Wéngertsbierg" is 1.8 km long from west to east, between Canach and Gostingen. A large part of this hill was originally used for wine-growing but has been left fallow for years, so much so that bushes and trees have grown up on the abandoned terraces.
Currently, the site has a mosaic of different vegetation groups with all transitional stages (dry calcareous grassland, meadow and lean pasture vegetation with a great diversity of grasses and flowers, scrub consisting mainly of blackthorn, hawthorn, rose and privet, but also trees such as cherry, wild pear and oak, solitary trees and old fruit trees, and dry-stone wall vegetation)
Since March 2016 the site "Wéngertsbierg" is classified as a nature reserve of national interest. It is a former hillside that has been largely abandoned. Of the 40 ha of vineyards that existed around 1920, 2.7 ha are still exploited, including 68 ares by the Hëllef fir d'Natur foundation.
