40 years - 40 natural reserves – Géischelterbaach
The nature reserve Geischelterbaach and Hoflee has an area of 42.20 hectares.
It is one of the most beautiful reserves of the Foundation and at the same time one of the most remarkable parts of the Eislek, the Geischelterbaach valley partly gully forest and alluvial forest, and the rocky ridge Hoflee, with its breathtaking views.
The reserve is a national hotspot for slope, scree and ravine forests. The linden forest (Tilio-Acerion), a European protected habitat, consists of a mixture of so-called noble deciduous trees such as maple, linden, ash or elm. These survive the extreme conditions of steep slopes with unstable rocky soils, characterized by landslides and the often cold and wet climate.
Due to the historical coppicing management, the slope and ravine forests can have the characteristics of a predominantly oak or hornbeam forest today.
The large area of the Geischelterbaach is a former hornbeam coppice forest, in which the characteristics of the Tilio-Acerion can be found, i.e. a mixed forest of lime and maple, often on sunny, south-facing slopes.
