Screen Time: Episode 70 - The Big Lebowski (13.09.26)
This week, we head from the bowling lanes of The Big Lebowski to the Alaskan wilderness, post-apocalyptic America and a very strange island.
Our Featured Soundtrack celebrates the Coen brothers’ gloriously eclectic musical universe, where Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, Captain Beefheart, Kenny Rogers, the Gipsy Kings and Townes Van Zandt somehow make perfect sense together. We also preview Brad Pitt and David Ayer’s survival thriller Heart of the Beast, while Liam and Noel Gallagher take their reunion from the stadium to the cinema in Oasis: Don’t Look Back In Anger, and we’ve tickets for the September 18 screening to give away.
At the Luxembourg box office, Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues to cling stubbornly to number one, ahead of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, while Insidious: Out of the Further makes a suitably creepy climb up the chart. In movie news, we round up the talking points from the Venice Film Festival, enter the arena with the colourful new Street Fighter, and take a look at Andrew Garfield leading Paul Greengrass’ medieval rebellion drama The Uprising.
Meanwhile, Ridley Scott’s The Dog Stars gets the review treatment: nowhere near the dud some have suggested, but a three-star disappointment that never quite delivers the excitement promised by its terrific premise, cast and source novel.
On television, Noah Wyle clocks back in for Season 3 of The Pitt, Mike Flanagan returns to Stephen King with a new adaptation of Carrie, Nicolas Cage’s Spider-Noir gets squashed after just one season, and Mr T has some distinctly uncharitable things to say about Netflix’s documentary about his life.
We also visit Apple TV’s wonderfully peculiar Widow’s Bay, a slow-burning mixture of small-town mystery, oddball comedy and Lovecraftian horror that takes a little while to reveal what it really is, but earns a thoroughly deserved four stars once the tentacles start emerging.
And in gaming, rumours suggest Twin Peaks could live on as a video game, Xbox steps in to rescue Hideo Kojima’s espionage project Physint after PlayStation walks away, and EA Sports FC 27 unveils another soundtrack destined to become permanently associated with transfer menus.
Throw in Show Tunes, a Kinepolis ticket competition and a Fun Film Fact revealing the rather intimate truth behind the sound of Jurassic Park’s Velociraptors, and Episode 70 covers everything from dinosaurs and demons to medieval revolution and mating tortoises.
