The Lunchbox – interview: Dr. Jean-Claude Schmit, Ministry Of Health

Health officials urge caution as Luxembourg faces extreme heat: "Even if you don't feel the thirst, you have to drink."
Luxembourg's Directorate of Health is urging residents to take extra precautions as temperatures continue to climb during this week's heatwave.
Speaking on RTL Today Radio's The Lunchbox – with Ben Andrews sitting in for Steps – Dr Jean-Claude Schmit described the current conditions as an "extreme situation" and warned that vulnerable groups, particularly older people and young children, should avoid prolonged exposure to the heat. He advised those most at risk to stay indoors during the hottest parts of the day and consider watching National Day celebrations from home. "It's really an extreme situation that we are having now" Schmit added.
Dr Schmit stressed that staying hydrated is essential, even for people who do not feel thirsty. He noted that older adults are particularly vulnerable because the sensation of thirst often diminishes with age, increasing the risk of dehydration during periods of high temperatures.
For those planning to attend celebrations, the advice is straightforward: wear a hat, stay in the shade whenever possible and carry water. Dr Schmit also urged moderation when it comes to alcohol consumption, warning that drinking alcohol can significantly increase the risk of dehydration. "Please avoid alcohol, at least not too much alcohol."
The Directorate is also encouraging people to pay attention to warning signs of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, nausea, fever and a general feeling of being unwell. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek shade, cool down and rehydrate immediately.
With fireworks and evening events still expected to attract large crowds, Dr Schmit suggested that residents enjoy outdoor activities later in the day once temperatures begin to fall.
Visitors attending celebrations in Luxembourg City are reminded that free water refill stations are available throughout the capital to help people stay hydrated during the heatwave.
