The Lunchbox: Maya Fisch interview

“I know my identity as a musician”: Maya Fish on finding confidence and staying authentic
Maya Fish never actually entered the Rocklab Songwriting Accelerator Programme herself, her mum did it for her. What began as little more than a voice memo unexpectedly opened the door to mentorship from Daniel Balthasar, production support from Charles Stoltz and the chance to develop a music video with a wider team of Luxembourg creatives.
Speaking to RTL Today Radio, Fish admits she initially wondered whether she belonged in that company at all, but says the programme ultimately gave her the confidence to understand both her value as an artist and the importance of protecting her own creative identity.
That identity is inseparable from her background in contemporary dance. Rather than treating music as a completely new direction, Fish sees songwriting, movement and visual performance as parts of the same creative language, describing the “body musicality” that influences how she hears rhythm and imagines her songs.
That approach extends to her videos and future releases, with choreography often developing in her head alongside the music itself. She also talks candidly about imposter syndrome, the financial barriers facing emerging musicians and learning to say no when something doesn't feel authentic.
With her debut track “If I Fall” now out in the world, Maya joined Stephen Steps Lowe to discuss an unexpected beginning, finding confidence and why becoming a musician doesn't mean leaving the dancer behind.
